Volume 2, No. 4, April 2002
April meeting
Saturday, April 20, African Beadwork, A slide presentation by Bo Breda
New member, Anne Blumer, joined us for the March meeting. Ann is a Certified
Gemologist with State Farm and makes exquisite jewelry, although beadwork is
relatively new for her.
March meeting: Laura Kroutil presented the afternoon program, Diagonal
Brick Stitch. An excellent presentation including increasing and decreasing
opening the doors for much potential in using this stitch in creative ways.
Officer's Reports
Officers and committee chairs provided reports and there was much discussion
on several topics followed by motions, seconds, and voting with the following
results:
- Vice President, Laura Kroutil (programs) - Laura would like to have an assistant.
Laura is planning a "field trip" to Chicago for bead shopping this summer.
Let her know what you would like to see on the trip, whether or not you will
be driving, etc.
- Secretary, Val Anderson - Minutes were approved as they appeared in the
March newsletter.
- Treasurer, Tammi Andrae - We were not able to open an account with a FEIN
number. To do so would require not-for-profit status, attorney fees for bylaws,
and we're not ready for that ($1,000). By motion, second and vote, we rescinded
the FEIN requirement previously voted for at the February meeting and an account
for the HOI Bead Society was opened at CEFCU using Tammi's SS# and checks
were deposited. This action will also make it easier for us in the future
if we ever decide to become a not-for-profit organization. Costs were $16.
Thanks to all whose 2001 checks should finally clear - appreciate your patience.
- Library, Diane Faulk - Diane reported the library is organized and we have
a check-out procedure in place. Mary Winter-Meyer donated a copy of her book
as well as several magazines. Thanks Mary!
- Community Service, Lois Hartwig - Please turn in your finished Bottles of
Hope for delivery to Eureka Oncology nurses.
- Annual Member Show, Bo Breda - Bo was not present
- President, Lois Hartwig - Reminder - Vote on the Society logo at the May
meeting. Our little needle guy cannot be used, so we need to get REALLY creative.
The Peoria Area Stitchers Guild has invited Society members to display their
work at the annual luncheon in May. Those wishing to display pieces are requested
to give them to Lois Hartwig by Saturday, May 4 for delivery to and from the
luncheon.
Lois received another call from the parent of a 14-year-old girl interested
in beadwork. Would anyone like to chair a committee for children's workshops?
Discussion and vote on the Society's website options were tabled until April.
Mary Winters-Meyer asked that we consider entering our beadwork projects in
the Illinois State Fair. Information is available on their website.
The Sugar Creek Arts Festival is July 13 &14. Stop by member Dina Powers'
booth - she'll be visiting from San Rafael, California.
There is an installation of works by Seattle glassblower Dale Chihuly at the
Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. A must see for all art glass lovers!
Lois is planning a trip for Saturday, April 27 - if interested, let her know.
She has room for two more!
A number of members have inquired about evening classes. Please let Lois Hartwig
know what you want to learn and which evenings are best for you. If there
is a group of six or more students - the class will be scheduled.
Connie Mueller has formed an evening group of about nine beaders who meet
at her husband's office. I believe they have set the date for the fourth Wednesday
of each month and will send one member to the general meeting the Saturday
before to remain current with Society activities. Contact Connie for more
information.
Show & Tell
All who bring items for Show & Tell should place them on the Show & Tell table
and sign the sheet noting a description of their item so Val can include them
properly in the minutes.
- Tammi shared several really great catalogs as well as a beaded Hardanger
Christmas ornament.
- Val shared her brick stitch eagle, a stamped card made by her daughter,
and porcupine gourd stitch on a Bottle of Hope! Hope she'll teach us how to
do this stitch - great texture!
- Laura had a brick stitch bracelet and earrings to share during her program.
- Diane Faulk shared a beaded watch band she made to replace a boring one.
- Anne Blumer shared Swarovski crystal necklaces, cultured pear necklaces,
and various gemstone necklaces she has made.
- Connie Mueller shared several samples she's made of various stitches found
in Creative Bead Weaving by Carol Wilcox Wells.
Hope we didn't miss anyone!
