What a spectacular meeting we enjoyed! So much news!
Bo Breda has had work accepted in Survey Fiber 2002, a juried show at the Snyderman-Works Gallery in Philadelphia. Congratulations, Bo - You've reached the top of the mountain! We're inspired by your hard work and courage and the beaded gourd is absolutely exquisite!
Mary J. Winters-Meyer was finally able to join us in February after spending
eight months completing a project that will appear in Valerie Hector's new book.
Most of us were rendered speechless at the sight of this project and realization
of the discipline it required! Overwhelmingly inspiring!
We had five visitors at our February meeting, the first since the Pantagraph article was published. Copies of the article are available. Bob Haerr gave Lois the plate from which it was printed. Both will be framed and kept with our historical material.
Officers and committee chairs provided reports and there was much discussion on several topics followed by motions, seconds, and voting with the following results:
There has been some interest from young people regarding meeting attendance and membership. It was agreed that members must be 17 years of age or older to join the Society. In the future, we may become active in providing special children's programs on beadwork, but nothing definite has been set. Would anyone like to chair a committee for children's workshops?
Mary J. Winters-Meyer was introduced and presented options for a Society
website. She showed us what the site might look like on a laptop computer
and written material is being reviewed by members. We will discuss and then
vote on one of the options available to us at the March meeting. Mary has
volunteered her services as webmaster at one level of service, other levels
are more expensive.
Show and Tell was absolutely spectacular this month! Just too many to list and describe! Thank you for sharing and giving us all inspiration for future projects!
The afternoon program was Amulet Bags and everyone seemed to get a good start on their beadwork around a tube. Look forward to seeing the finished bags - and if anyone needs help, Lois will be available during lunch and after the March meeting to guide you.
Article by Lois Hartwig - Tips for New Beaders
"Great original artists take a tradition into themselves.
They have not shunned but digested it.
Then the very conflict set up between it and what is new in themselves and in their environment creates the tension that demands a new mode of expression.
Understanding modern and traditional in this light, the designer is able to bring into a new and logical relationship traditional (graphic) forms and ideas together with "new" concepts based on a present day point of view."
